3. Measure out and mark the spot where you’ll be installing your ceiling medallion.
WARNING - If you’re installing your ceiling medallion around an electrical fixture 1. Turn your power off at the breaker box before you install your medallion.
2. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on your ceiling fan, light fixture, or chandelier to make sure your fixture is properly supported.
3. Consult your local electrical codes or speak with a licensed electrician to make sure the installation of your fixture meets code requirements.
4. Do not use your medallion as a support for your fixture.
5. Do not use your fixture to support the weight of your medallion.
Permanent installation of ceiling medallions with a ceiling fan or light fixture:
1. Before you install your medallion, turn off the power at the breaker box.2. Disconnect your current fixture and remove it prior to installing your ceiling medallion.
3. Measure the canopy cover of your fixture. In the center of your medallion, drill a hole using your keyhole saw, jig saw, or pen knife. Make sure the hole you drill is not larger than the canopy cover of your fixture. Most canopies can cover a diameter hole of three inches.
4. Lay your ceiling medallion face down on a safe surface that will not mar your finish. A clean cloth works well for this.
5. Using latex adhesive or caulking, apply a continuous bead of around ½” around the back edge of your medallion.
6. Carefully feed your electrical wiring through the center hole of the medallion and gently press it into place.
7. Apply caulking to the edge of your medallion as needed, and smooth the excess around the edge with your finger or a putty knife. Remove any excess by wiping it off with a damp sponge.
8. If your medallion is large, you may need to tack it into place with nails. If you’re planning to remove the nails after your adhesive or caulking dries, leave around ½” of the nails exposed to make them easier to remove. (HINT: When placing your nails, put them in ornamental areas of your medallion to make the holes easier to conceal.) In two or three hours, when your adhesive or caulking is dry, either remove your finishing nails or use a nail set to countersink them, making sure that your nails penetrate the wall at least ½”.
9. Fill your nail holes with adhesive or caulking. Smooth the surface with your putty knife or finger. If needed, lightly sand any remaining rough spots with extra fine sandpaper when the caulking is dry.
10. Reconnect your ceiling fan, light fixture, or chandelier. Slide the canopy cover of your fixture up to the medallion and tighten the ring against the medallion until snug. If the supplied down rod or thread pipe does not accommodate your medallion’s thickness, you may need to purchase a longer rod or pipe.
11. Touch up the finish on your medallion if necessary.
